Working alongside our partners, the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone has been able to see the accomplishments of great milestones:

  • City adoption of a Health and Wellness Element to the General Plan:   
    • Healthy Food and Vending Policy for all City-sponsored events and vending machines (May 2013).
    • Community Garden Ordinance that will allow residents to create community gardens in open spaces.
  • Lemon Grove School District adoption of a strengthened District Student Wellness Policy [BP5030]:
    • In January of 2013, the LGSD reinstated the Health and Wellness Council to help revise the policy and strengthen the health language, including specific 5210 language; the policy was then adopted in June.
  • Local park beautification by Lemon Grove YEAH! club [stencil and painting of stem walls at Lemon Grove Park].
  • Increased community engagement opportunities:
    • YEAH!= Youth Engagement & Action for Health
    • RLA= Resident Leadership Academy; 3 Academies have been hosted: 2011, 2013 and 2014. In all over 30 residents have been trained in the curriculum.
    • CHIP partners' Project Lean, Parents in Action graduating class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (March).
  • Increased partner engagement and participation to increase opportunities for healthy eating and active living in Lemon Grove:
    • Increasing number of healthy meal options on Lemon Grove restaurant menus.
    • Increasing healthy options that are more accessible and promoted at local Lemon Grove small markets.
  • Creating early childcare Wellness Champions and prioritizing client referrals to providers, ensuring healthy environments for children ages 0-5 years.
  • Implementation of Farm to Preschool in 24 Lemon Grove home and center-based child care providers; 21 sites have installed garden builds for their programs to gain hands on experience regarding where food comes from.
  • Collarborated with Circulate San Diego to create 5 unique walking maps of Lemon Grove.

Accomplishments Specific to the HEAL Zone

  • Circulate San Diego recognized the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone with their, "Healthy Community" award.
  • 3 Water Stations have been installed at three LGSD schools: Mt. Vernon Elementary, San Miguel Elementary and Vista La Mesa Middle.
  • The Community Assessment baseline data collected via Lemon Grove residents in 2013 ranked highest of all 10 Southern California HEAL Zones.
  • In June of 2013, between 400-500 residents participated in the Inaugural HEAL Zone Walk Block Kickoff Event
    • Approximately 200 participants walked 162 miles around the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone Walk Block.
