2015 Community Events

On December 7th, the City hosted their annual Community Bonfire. The HELA Zone hosted a table that promoted physical activity opportunities to the residents. The capital improvements at both Berry Street [walking path] and Lemon Grove (Washington Street) [exercise equipment] parks were shown via visual boards to the attendees. HEAL Zone also provided residents with incentives to get people outside like collapsable water bottles, jump ropes and sidewalk chalk. Click here to see photos.

On November 21st, residents and community partners of the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the newly installed walking path at Berry Street Park. The HEAL Zone is hopeful that this walking path will help increase physical activity for the residents of the community. Click here to see photos.

On November 7th, the Lemon Grove School District hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for their new athletic facilities behind the Library and Lemon Grove Academy. The new facility includes: volleyball, tennis and basketball courts, as well as a softball field and track. The greater community can use these facilities for FREE, every Saturday, thanks to the revised Joint Use Agreement between the City and School District. Click here to see photos.

On August 1st, the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone participated in the Resident Convening, hosted by Community Partners for the Kaiser Permanente's Southern California HEAL Initiative. This peer exchange was held in the beautiful beach town of Ventura, California. Lemon Grove HEAL Zone Staff were joined by residents and Steering Committee members. The purpose of this Resident Convening was to ensure that participants walked away with the necessary information they would need during the application process for HEAL Zone Phase 2. On April 11th, in celebration of National Gardening Month and National Public Health Week, the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone partnered with the UCSD Center for Community Health, Retail Program and Healthy Markets Action Team to host a gardening and nutrition education event. We held the gardening demo at the Farmers Market, where the owner, Don was so gracious to not only provide us with space, but sent out smoothie samples to the class. This event was open to all ages and went over many important gardening tips including soil type and when to water your garden.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this event a success, including the attendees and Lemon Grove Cub Scout Pack 108! Special thanks to Permaculture teacher, Lemon Grove resident and founder of the Organic Edible Garden Club, Marianne West who taught the class AND donated plants to raffle off. On March 19th, the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone hosted a dinner for Lemon Grove Resident Leadership Academy Alumni. These graduates are residents who completed the RLA curriculum in 2011, 2013 or 2014. For some of the graduates, this was the first time they got to meet one another, for others, this dinner provided an opportunity to reconnect with old friends.

During the dinner, the graduates got to hear an update regarding the accomplishments of the HEAL Zone. Afterward, the RLA alumni were able to interact with CHIP and HEAL Zone staff to inquiry about ongoing strategies and some even chose to get involve with the current work of the HEAL Zone. 2014 Community Events

The 17th Annual Community Bonfire was held on December 5, 2014. It was a great turnout from the residents, approximately 2800. The Lemon Grove HEAL Zone promoted our ten local restaurants that have incorporated healthier menu options, even providing samples from both Coop's West Texas BBQ and Charley's Famous Hamburgers, as well as 5210 messaging and the new deli that was opened at Don's Farmers Market. Special thanks to our partners from UCSD School of Medicine, Center for Community Health, Retail Program for supplying the tangerines from Don's Farmer's Market. Click here to see the photos.

The Lemon Grove City Council recognized ten (10) local restaurants that have committedd to offering healthier food choices on their menus, including the kids menus at some of these establishments. The Lemon Grove HEAL Zone teamed up with Healthy Kids Choice Inc. to work with these local restaurants to help provide healthier food options to their customers. On November 21, 2014, the third Lemon Grove cohort of the Resident Leadership Academy graduated. This RLA was a joint venture between the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone and our partners over at the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services, East Region. On November 7, 2014, the twenty Lemon Grove early childcare providers were honored for participating and completing the Farms to Preschool curriculum. Our partners over at the YMCA, Childcare Resource Services, worked with this group of providers in order for them to provide early education to small children around the improtance of agriculture and healthy eating, including the Harvest of the Month program. The Kaiser Permanente, "Healthy Eating Active Living" Initiative held their annual Youth Regional Convening, right here in Lemon Grove, on July 16, 2014. On May 31, 2014, the Lemon Grove HEAL Zone participated in Lemon Grove Alive! Event hosted by the Lemon Grove Rotary and held at the Lemon Grove Academy. The Lemon Grove HEAL Zone helped promote on of our local markets, Don's Farmers' Market, who is committed to bringing the city healthier choices. Click here to see the photos.

The Lemon Grove HEAL Zone cohosted a training workshop with Live Well San Diego East Region and California Project Lean on May 6, 2014. The purporse of this workshop was to povide parents the tools they would need inorder for them to advocate and promote healthy beverages at their children's school. Click here to see the photos.

2013 Community Events

On July 24, 2013, the Lemon Grove hosted our 1st annual Partner Celebration. This event brought together all sorts of people from community residents to public health professionals, that came together to help make Lemon Grove a healthier community! Click here to see the photos.
