Recognition Awards

The COI Recognition Award Program is designed to highlight the many accomplishments that result from the hard work of the COI domain members. Domain Champions have the opportunity to present a certificate to any partner(s) in their work group that they feel have done an outstanding job at fulfilling one of the Initiative's key goals. Domain Champions can award individuals certificates of recognition in any of the the three following areas:

  1. Nutrition-Given for work that increases culturally-appropriate opportunities for all children and families to access and eat healthful foods.
  2. Physical activity-Given for work that increases inclusive and culturally appropriate opportunities for all children and families to engage in physical activity.
  3. Environment-Given for work that increases other opportunities to enhance economic, social, service, and built environments.

Names of the partners that have received a certificate will be listed on the COI website as individuals being recognized for their outstanding work.

Quick Facts

  • Overweight children are far more likely to be obese as adults (California Center of Public Health Advocacy, 2009)
  • More children are being diagnosed with diseases linked to overweight and obesity previously seen only in adults, such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease (The Obesity Society, 2009).
  • Walking and biking have decreased more than 40% during the past 3 decades, partly because of unsafe routes and poor walking conditions (Active Living Research, 2009).
